Quarterly Construction Update: Progress at Tacoma’s Old City Hall
As the transformation at Tacoma’s Old City Hall continues, we’re excited to share the latest construction updates from behind the scenes. With each phase, we get closer to restoring this iconic landmark to its former glory, blending historic charm with modern functionality.
Phase 1 Work in Progress.
Our contractors are working diligently from the 4th floor down to the 2nd floor to complete Phase 1. Phase 1 includes floors 2-4 which will be offices, co-working spaces, restaurants, and retail spaces. This systematic approach ensures efficient progress as we tackle key infrastructure upgrades and prepare the building for its next chapter.
Upgrades to HVAC, Lighting, and More
The building's new heating and cooling systems are taking shape, with ducting installation on the 2nd floor about 30% complete. As ceilings are finished, lighting installation follows. Lighting on the 4th floor is currently underway, bringing modern amenities while preserving the space's character.
Plumbing, electrical, HVAC, and lighting systems remain on schedule, ensuring every detail is attended to as we move closer to reopening.
Steel Bracing: A Major Milestone
One of the largest updates is the completion of steel bracing on the west side of the building. This critical reinforcement work strengthens the structure, safeguarding Old City Hall for future generations. Crews are now focusing on the final bracing on the east side.
To facilitate this work, all floors from the basement below Pacific Avenue to the 3rd floor are currently open. As bracing progresses upward, the remaining floors will be opened to complete the steel framework up to the 6th floor.
