COMMUNITY HIGHLIGHT: Velma Stewart
Meet the wildly wonderful, Velma Stewart, of FLYSTART Foundation. An intervention/prevention organization that steers individuals away from institutionalized models, helping incarcerated folks explore and grow through art.
They create entrepreneurial spirits through mentorship, community support, and professional networking. Additionally, providing financial literacy programs, and spaces that allow for artists to learn the power of investing their time, energy, and capital into themselves and their respective crafts. With the goal of letting them know that they are not forgotten and that there are opportunities for them to advance in the artistic field when they come home.
This series aims to ask REAL questions that elicit REAL human answers and Velma’s interview does just that. When asked simply, what love is, she struggles earnestly to encapsulate a response. We don’t always know. We don’t always have the answers. We don’t always receive in reciprocation, all that we deserve. Velma embodies selflessness - doing it anyways, for the greater good.
There are so many amazing community members, like Velma, who work tirelessly, often unnoticeably, for this city and for our community. And that is exactly what this series is for. To highlight the Velma’s of Tacoma, who make this place so uniquely special. We can’t thank her enough for sharing honestly with us, and for her endless availability.
