7 Ways We’re Staying Cool in Tacoma this Summer

In a state where it rains upwards of 150 days out of the year, when that summer sun hits the PNW, we are throwing off our rain jackets and heading outdoors to soak up every minute of those glorious golden rays. Summers in Tacoma are heating up, but there are plenty of ways to stay cool while enjoying sunshine in the city.

Enjoy Tacoma's Waterfront

It’s no secret that Ruston Way offers a cooler atmosphere with its ocean breeze. A walk along its paved path offers slightly cooler temps and incredible views. However, for the ultimate cool-down, we suggest a dip in the Sound. Ruston Way has tons of small beaches you can hop down to for a quick dip or to set up for a day of sun and swimming. We personally love Jack Hyde Park for a more sandy experience!

Outdoor Recreational Activities

Even on the hottest of days, that ocean water can bring a chill. Explore the Sound in new ways with local paddle board and kayak rentals. You can find Big Bus Padde Sports set up along the waterfront all summer long. Or check out the kayak rentals down at Owen Beach. If water isn’t your jam, a walk/hike or bike ride through Five Mile Drive offers shade and serenity amidst the bustling city, or create your own breeze at Wheel Fun Rentals down at Point Ruston.

Retail Therapy

Gear up with an iced drink in hand from a local cafe or coffee shop and take a break from the heat by bopping around the shops in Tacoma. From Pac Ave, to 6th Ave, Proctor to Hilltop, there are tons of local small businesses in every neighborhood to support and check out for a break from the sun.

Visit Museums and Galleries

Tacoma has a variety of museums and galleries that are both educational and cool. Spend a day exploring the vibrant culture, stunning glass art, rich history, classic cars, family-friendly activities, and maritime heritage of Tacoma's Museum District. Every third Thursday of the month they offer free admission to the Tacoma Art Museum, Washington State History Museum, Foss Waterway Seaport Museum, and Museum of Glass. For the kiddos, The Children’s Museum is always a hit.

Catch a Movie

Nothing helps beat the heat like an air conditioned room, a good movie and a cold drink. Catch a cool film at one of Tacoma's awesome movie theaters – a great way to escape the heat for a couple of hours! You can’t go wrong with the Cinemark Century at Point Ruston but don’t forget to support local when you can. A screening at The Grand Cinema is always a fun experience for the whole family.

Indoor Recreational Activities

Sometimes more fun can be had indoors than out! DEFY Trampoline Park, Odyssey1, The STAR Center all know how to provide endless fun while keeping you cool. You can’t go wrong with bowling or indoor mini-golf either!

Cool Off with Ice Cream

A visit to your local ice cream shop will always bring some refreshing relief in the heat. Ice Cream Social, Dreamer Ice Cream, Cookie Dough Delight, Bliss Small Batch Creamery are all solid options for tasty treat.

Tacoma has a special and unique blend of city, sea and forest. No matter the time of year, there are so many ways to enjoy our beautiful city all year around.
